EINLADUNG ZUR EINLIEFERUNG

LOS 58, RUDOLF SCHWARZKOGLER, ‘3. Aktion’, Wien 1965
Starting Price: 8.000 € / Price reached: 28.800 €

AUCTION RESULTS: 24. Photo Auction – 19. November 2021

Viennese Actionism and dancing priests
Bidders at the 24th OstLicht Photo Auction made a strong statement for Austrian photography. A Ludwig Hoffenreich photograph of Rudolf Schwarzkogler's famous 3rd Action in 1965 fetched 28,800 euros, while the rare, large-format print of Heinz Cibulka sitting naked with a bandaged penis on a white ball had started at 8,000 euros.

Fellow Actionist Alfons Schilling also landed in the top field with his picture of the street riots on the occasion of the US Democratic Party Convention in August 1968: "Chicago Demo, Teargas", one of his rare lenticular pictures, was worth 26,400 euros to a collector. The lot was called for 18,000 euros.
Several of Franz Hubmann's famous Viennese street photographs between Brunnenmarkt and Café Hawelka as well as portraits of artists were successfully auctioned. In total, the pictures of the pioneering Austrian photojournalist were sold for 24,240 euros.
In addition, numerous icons of international photography history also contributed to the excellent overall result. For example, Mario Giacomelli's "Dancing Priests" ("Pretini") from 1961, which was called at 4,800 Euros, ended up fetching 10,800 Euros.
The excellent sales rate was over 80 percent. All prices with premium.

INVITATION TO CONSIGN

VALIE EXPORT, “Einschluss” (Inclusion), 1972, from the series “Körperkonfigurationen”, sold for 25,200 Euro (starting price: 14,000 Euro)

READ ABOUT OUR LAST AUCTION RESULTS

It was the first lot of the 22nd OstLicht Photo Auction that climbed to a sensational 408,000 Euro: Nine daguerreotypes, among them the earliest known photographic view of Shanghai. This only recently discovered historic rarity, which sheds new light on the beginnings of photography in China, started at 180,000 Euro. The nine plates have been attributed to the French historian and economist Natalis Rondot, who probably took them during his diplomatic mission in China between 1844 and 1845.

The following 150 lots brought more outstanding results. The excitement of Alfred Eisenstaedt’s “Children at a Puppet Theatre” from 1963 went to a collector for 18,000 Euro (starting price: 8,000 Euro). Feminism is among the further winners: VALIE EXPORT’s “Einschluss” (Inclusion), 1972, from her series “Körperkonfigurationen” was sold for 25,200 Euro (starting price: 14,000 Euro).
